Cocaine vs. Benzoylecgonine

Cocaine itself has a short half-life of roughly 1 hour. The body rapidly metabolizes it into benzoylecgonine (BZE), which is what most drug tests detect. BZE is detectable much longer and is the reason cocaine shows up on urine tests days after use.

Detection Windows by Test Type

TestOccasional UseHeavy Use
Urine2-4 daysUp to 14 days
Blood12-24 hoursUp to 48 hours
Saliva1-2 daysUp to 3 days
HairUp to 90 days90+ days

Factors That Affect Detection

  • -Frequency and amount of use
  • -Body fat percentage (BZE accumulates in fatty tissue)
  • -Kidney function and hydration
  • -Metabolic rate and age
