What Outpatient Treatment Provides
Standard outpatient is the final step in Archangel Centers' clinical continuum: Detox Concierge → PHP → IOP → Outpatient. After completing PHP and IOP, clients often have the foundational skills for recovery but benefit significantly from continued clinical support as they navigate real-world challenges, employment, relationships, and triggers.
Outpatient at Archangel Centers is not a formality. Your counselor tracks your progress, adjusts your treatment plan, coordinates with your psychiatric provider, and connects you to community resources, all while giving you the flexibility to fully re-engage with your life.
Research consistently shows that longer treatment duration is associated with better long-term outcomes. Most clients who complete PHP and IOP and continue with outpatient support for 6 to 12 months have meaningfully lower relapse rates than those who step all the way out of care after IOP.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is standard outpatient addiction treatment?
- Standard outpatient (ASAM Level 1) provides addiction therapy at 1 to 2 sessions per week. It includes individual counseling, group therapy, and case management. It is appropriate for adults who have completed PHP or IOP, or whose clinical presentation indicates this is the right starting level of care.
- What is the difference between outpatient and IOP?
- IOP (ASAM Level 2.1) provides 9 to 15 hours per week across 3 to 5 days. Standard outpatient (ASAM Level 1) provides 1 to 2 sessions per week, fewer than 9 hours total. Outpatient follows IOP as clients stabilize and need less clinical intensity.
- Does insurance cover outpatient addiction treatment?
- Yes. Under MHPAEA, commercial insurance plans cover outpatient addiction treatment. Individual therapy and group sessions are commonly covered by Horizon BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare. We verify your benefits before your first appointment.
- How long does outpatient treatment last?
- Outpatient treatment length is individually determined. Many clients engage in outpatient support for 6 to 12 months or longer after PHP and IOP. Ongoing clinical support significantly reduces relapse risk during the transition to independent living.
- Does outpatient drug rehab in NJ accept insurance?
- Yes. Outpatient drug rehab in New Jersey is covered by most major commercial insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. Archangel Centers verifies your specific plan benefits before your first appointment at no charge.
