Benzodiazepines - Xanax Withdrawal Timeline: What Days 1 to 14 Actually Feel Like

The Xanax withdrawal timeline begins within 6 to 12 hours after the last dose of alprazolam, with symptoms peaking between days 2 and 4 before gradually subsiding over one to four weeks.

Why Xanax Withdrawal Is Dangerous

Benzodiazepine withdrawal, including Xanax (alprazolam), can be life-threatening. Like alcohol, benzos act on GABA receptors, and abrupt cessation can trigger seizures, severe anxiety, hallucinations, and in rare cases, cardiac complications. This is not something to manage alone. Anyone dependent on Xanax should discuss tapering and medical supervision with a physician before stopping.

The Xanax Withdrawal Timeline

Hours 6-12Initial anxiety, restlessness, and irritability emerge as Xanax clears the system. Short-acting benzos like Xanax produce faster onset withdrawal than longer-acting ones like Valium.
Days 1-3Acute withdrawal. Intense anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, heart palpitations, sweating, tremors, and muscle tension. This is the highest medical risk window for seizures in severe dependence.
Days 4-7Physical symptoms begin to stabilize for most people. Psychological symptoms (anxiety, depression, cognitive fogginess) remain prominent. Sleep disturbances continue.
Days 7-14Most acute symptoms resolve. Rebound anxiety (anxiety that is often more intense than before Xanax use) is common. Cognitive difficulties and emotional dysregulation may persist.
Weeks 2-8Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) can include waves of anxiety, depression, difficulty concentrating, and cognitive impairment that can persist for months in heavy long-term users.

Medical Management

The standard clinical approach to Xanax withdrawal is a gradual taper using a longer-acting benzodiazepine like diazepam (Valium), administered under medical supervision. This reduces seizure risk and manages withdrawal severity.
